About the Project

This was a project I did for my Typography class, where I had to design a series of book covers by one author. I was given a list of authors to choose from and I ended up choosing Italo Calvino. Since this assignment was for typography, I had to find a way to make the words and type tell the story without using any graphics. So I really had to think outside the box for this project.

Designing the Covers

When trying to come up with a design for each of the three covers, I really had to look into what the books were about. Once I had an idea of what I wanted to do for each book, I designed a first draft in Illustrator for the front covers. Then, once I found the designs I liked, I worked on the back cover with a tagline, summary, and a review. Finally, I put the front and back covers into InDesign to create the full version.

Handmade Typography

For one of the covers, I also had to incorporate some handmade typography. So for The Baron in the Trees cover I made a design in Illustrator, then I used that design to engrave it on a piece of wood. All of this was done using a laser cutter at the TCNJ Makerspace. I then scanned the wood using Adobe Scan to make a PDF file of the wooden cover that I would put into InDesign to make the rest of the book cover.
